M. David Cohen appeared Sunday, January 29,  2006 as part of the Lyric Stage Theater’s innovative celebrity participation. The theater welcomed Mr. Cohen, performing as the King of Germany in The Underpants (by Carl Sternheim).  In honor of Mr. Cohen’s appearance, guests were asked to make a donation to the charity of Mr. Cohen’s choice, The Franny Spitaleri MS Foundation.  100% of funds collected by that foundation provide Multiple Sclerosis research.

The Underpants
By Carl Sternheim, Adapted by Steve Martin, Directed by Daniel Gidron

A mild-mannered housewife becomes an instant celebrity when her unruly pantaloons accidentally fall down as she watches a parade. Her newfound fame scandalizes her priggish husband, and brings out a string of odd suitors hoping to rent a room in their apartment. Comic mastermind Steve Martin’s sidesplitting adaptation of this classic 1910 German farce about a wardrobe malfunction is a hilarious look at the vagaries of fleeting fame.

M. David Cohen discovered his love for theater while a student at Everett High School where he served as President of the Dramatics Club and the play performed that year was “The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis.”

His career has taken him far and wide from serving during the Vietnam Era as an Air Force Acting Jewish Chaplain based in Paris, France to establishing food programs (now known as “Meals on Wheels”) for “The Little Sisters of the Poor” Catholic Charities. As a Circuit Chaplain, Mr. Cohen served 8 bases in France, Spain, Morocco and Libya, conducting Torah Convocations in Berchtesgarden, Germany, before returning to complete his military service at Eglin AFB, Florida.

Mr. Cohen (with a “C” a line from the play) traveled to 44 countries settling in Los Angeles from 1970 through 2002 where he established his business consulting/marketing firm with fund raising divisions for nonprofits.  He returned to Boston, underwent double bypass heart surgery, recovered beautifully, counsels veterans undergoing open heart surgery at a local veterans hospital, executive produces and hosts the Dining with David TV show and is fulfilling a lifelong aspiration by making his legitimate theater debut today here at the Lyric Stage Theater in Steve Martin’s adapted play.
