Edward LeoEdward Leo

(former EHS Principal, Football Coach and Social Studies Teacher)

LEO, Edward Of South Yarmouth, passed away on May 25 at Massachusetts General Hospital after a brief illness. Native and longtime resident of Everett. Devoted husband of 52 years of Mamie J. Leo. Loving father of Jacqueline Hopkinson of Fremont, New Hampshire, Sandra Leo-Clark of Marstons Mills, and Judy Bongiorno of Winchester. Proud grandfather of Jeffrey and Angela Clark and of Juliana and Michael Bongiorno. Son of the late Sam and Concetta (Dascoli) Leo. Brother of Eleanor Kelly and John Leo and the late Lewis, Frank, and Genarro Leo. After graduating from Everett High, he attended Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, graduating in 1953. He then served in the United States Army and obtained two Masters degrees in education at Northeastern University. He went on to become a longtime history teacher and football coach at Everett High School. He later became Vice Principal before becoming Everett High School Principal in 1985, serving at that position until he retired in 1993. He also served as the Head Football Coach at Chelsea High School for seven years. An All-Scholastic football player at Everett and a varsity letterman for three years at Cornell, he was a founding and lifetime member of the Everett “E” Club and founder of the Greater Boston League Football Coaches’ Association. Funeral from the William R. Carafa & Son Home For Funerals 389 Washington Ave. Chelsea on Sat. May 28 at 9:00 A.M. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Anthony’s Church 38 Oakes St. Everett at 10:00 A.M. Relatives and friends kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours in the funeral home on Fri. from 4-8 P.M. Interment Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Edward Leo Scholarship Fund, 72 Bacon Street, Winchester, MA 01890.
